Your 2020 Summer Verbier
Whisper it quietly, but there might just be a summer holiday season after all.
Two months on since the ski season came to an abrupt halt and Verbier looks a very different place. The snowline has retreated far up the mountain to reveal lush green meadows and carpets of wildflowers. The authorities have lifted many of the restrictions across Switzerland, and Verbier is coming back to life again, with people getting on with their daily lives and preparing for the summer.
2020 Summer Verbier is here! The in-resort Verbier bus service is up and running again, Mountain Air is open for those wanting to rent mountain bikes and e-bikes, and Televerbier are hoping to open the lift system on June 11th. Construction gets underway next month on the Mont Fort zipwire, which will soon be taking thrill-seekers from the 3,330m summit of Verbier’s highest peak to the Col des Gentianes at speeds of 140kmh. Not for the faint-hearted!
Many of the shops, restaurants and cafés have reopened, albeit with restrictions in place to ensure social distancing. Verbier’s golf course and tennis club are welcoming players again, and the climbing wall and squash courts at the Sports Centre are due to open in mid-June. There is a real buzz about town again.
Sadly Verbier’s world-famous classical music festival has had to be cancelled this year, but the e-bike Festival is still due to take place from 13-16 August, with a different format that respects the national regulations. Altitude and Les Elfes will be running their kids’ activity camps in July and August and the excellent Milly Rose starts her yoga classes next weekend.
There are encouraging signs that border restrictions might be eased across Europe in the coming weeks, with airlines planning to resume some of their operations to/from Switzerland as well. We will be keeping a close eye on developments, as we know that many of you are longing to experience the wonders of Verbier in summertime!
